A July 1875 Philipsburg Journal article stated Mr. L.G. Lingle purchased the property from C.A. Faulkner and began the erection “of a large and handsome residence on the site” done by J.W. Jones and Sons, reported at the time to be “one of the finest dwellings in town.” In September of 1875, Lingle had put gas pipes throughout his new residence, “in anticipation that the town will someday awake to the necessity of illuminating with gas...”

On one of the bay windows in the dining room is scratched “A.W. Lingle, 1876.” The story is that the house was built for newlyweds, and the husband used his new bride’s ring to sign the window. The house was originally frame, but the front was encased in brick in Georgian style in 1934. On the Beaver Street side, the original siding shows. George McGaffey bought the home in 1890, and his descendants lived in the home for more than 100 years.
