This building was built in 1876 by Chester Munson. Munson developed the south side of Philipsburg and what is now called “Chester Hill.” The Philipsburg Journal used Munson’s “new” building as its office for a time after the great fire of June 30, 1876 destroyed the newspaper’s original office and printing press that had been on the corner of Front and Presqueisle Streets. The paper was kept going for a time by sending its copy to by train to Osceola to be printed. This building was originally three separate storefronts; one section burned and was not rebuilt and is now the empty lot beside it.
