The Kessler Building is one of the oldest buildings in downtown, having been built in 1859. In the great fire of 1876, it was saved from the raging inferno by hanging wet blankets over the windows, prior to the arrival by special train of the Tyrone Fire Dept., which turned its hoses on the building, using water pumped from the Moshannon Creek. It housed the L.G. Kessler General Merchandise store for more than 50 years. L.G. Kessler was also a contractor on the Huntingdon and Broadtop Mountain Railroad and was later a lumberman.
