Located on the site of the first house and tavern in town built by George Shultz, The Philips Hotel was built in 1921 by the Philips Hotel Corporation, which included, among others, the esteemed Charles Rowland (see more on the Front and S. Centre St. tours). This hotel’s construction practically put many of the town’s other lodging establishments out of business. It was a swanky establishment that included a ballroom, coffee shop, and dining room. In 1961, The Presbyterian Home converted the hotel to an assisted care residence that closed in 2006.
